Cutie Honey

Can Cutie Honey find some junk food, save the world, and still make it to her day job on time?

Cutie Honey is a live action movie based on a Japanese manga/TV series/anime franchise. I’m not familiar with any of the previous work, so I won’t comment on how the movie may compares to it. This movie is an extremely silly, brightly-colored, comic-book romp. Anyone in the mood for a serious, thought-provoking film need not apply, but if you’d like some goofy super-heroine fun Cutie Honey might be your movie.

Cutie Honey had a low budget but the CG effects are very anime-like, and the fights are edited in a stylish way that works well with the silly tone and bright comic-book look. The results are amusingly garish and sometimes very pretty—this movie offers up some very nice eye candy.

Speaking of eye-candy, Cutie Honey is played by Eriko Sato. In addition to being cute and spending most of the movie in revealing outfits, she just manages to capture the essence of the role. She is ludicrously optimistic and cheerful, yet still adorable most of the time.

After an action-packed beginning the movie slows down quite a bit for the middle portion, which is really my only complaint. Things pick up again towards the end, and you’ll even be treated to some musical bits along the way.

Cutie Honey is cute, goofy, mindless fun. There are definitely worse ways to spend an hour and a half.

I've never seen the movie, but a buddy of mine hooked me up with a few of the TV episodes. It is a pretty silly show, kind of a cross between Power Rangers and Benny Hill. I've heard the chick in the movie was cuter than then one in the show so I have to check it out. Even though this isn't really my cup of tea 90 minutes of a hot chick in skimpy outfits seems good to me!

I saw the first episode of the newer TV show after seeing the movie and I have to say I liked the movie quite a bit more. It's possible the TV show would grow on me if I gave it a chance, but I decided I had better things to watch. It's not really the kind of thing I want to invest 12 hours in.

Eriko Sato is very cute and she's actually not a bad actress. After watching Cutie Honey I saw her in Funuke Show Some Love, You Losers!, which is a very good Japanese black comedy/drama. A very different role for her, and I was really surprised at how good she was in it. I may review it at some point.
