A fast talking con-man with ‘the gift of the gab’ (Noel Madison) forms a hate group called The Avenging Angels, and with the help of a fat, crooked governor, attempts to take over America (state by state) by selling fascism disguised as patriotism and national pride (sound familiar?).
A fine, ahead of its time feature, this is an exercise in N.L.P tho’, it’s hard to tell whether the film makers (who also gave us White Zombie—32) are criticising communism, fascism, the KKK, or their own corrupt Washington government - either way, it’s a scathing and still relevent story and hell… current western governments use the exact same dialogue, rhetoric and tactics to create xenophobic fears which we all now know will eventually lead to the removal of all our civil liberties and the imposition of martial law...... (ahem).
Made just before America entered WWII, it’s an interesting, clunky, basically shot B+W potboiler you can double bill with Wag The Dog (97)—or anything currently running on Fox News.
